Seismic Grant Projects

Overview

The school district applied to the Seismic Rehabilitation Grant Program through Business Oregon in 2019 and was awarded two grants in the spring of 2020. The gymnasium at Crater High School and original brick “1910” school building at Hanby Middle School each received state grants of close to $2.5 million. Both buildings are considered community assets and will be added by the Red Cross to the National Shelter System once complete. Since bond planning was already underway with architects, engineers and general contractors, the district was able to easily coordinate these two projects to the work already being planned on these campuses.

Hanby Middle School

Hanby Middle School is the oldest school in the Central Point School District!

The 2003 bond allowed the district to expand the Hanby with the 2003 building, however many needs remained in the historic 1910 Building. Due to fire safety and accessibility issues, the 3rd floor of the historic building has not been utilized.

Thanks to careful planning and multiple funding sources including the 2019 bond, a state funded seismic rehabilitation grant, and federal funded Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER), the district has made substantial upgrades to allow full use of the 1910 Building.

  • Complete seismic upgrade and remodel of the 1910 Building, including full utilization of the third floor and five additional classroom spaces for increased student capacity.
    • In addition, new energy efficient windows and locker upgrades have been installed in the 1910 Building.

Project Summary: Hanby Middle School 1910 Building Seismic Upgrades

Currently the 3rd floor of the building is not fully-utilized due to fire and ADA ingress/egress issues. The district hopes to leverage the Seismic Rehabilitation Grant funds with bond funds to fully utilize these spaces.

The grant will shore up the historic building as follows:

  • Provide blocking and nailing connections between exterior walls and floor and roof diaphragms.
  • Add new shear walls on the inside face of some exterior unreinforced masonry walls.
  • Provide new strapping and blocking lines between the exterior walls to complete cross ties.
  • Add plywood sheathing to the underside of the floor framing and over the roof framing.
  • Brace all storage racks, cabinets, and bookshelves to structure.
  • Attach and brace mechanical equipment, emergency lighting, piping, ducting, and gas piping per current code.
  • Exterior unreinforced masonry parapets will be braced back to the roof diaphragm
  • The canopy at the entry will be braced laterally.

Grant Value: $2,500,000

Crater High School

The Crater High School Gym is complete! Seismic upgrades and retrofit have been conducted to provide structural improvement and reinforcement for resiliency during a seismic event.

Project Summary: Crater High School Gym Seismic Upgrades

The grant will shore up the building as follows:

  • Full-height reinforcing will be installed along the face of each pilaster along the west wall, and existing concrete footings will be enlarged.
  • Blocking, clipping and nailing connections will be added along top of walls to establish adequate connections between top of wall and diaphragms.
  • Structural steel beams will be installed between the wood girt wall above and the concrete tilt-up wall below.
  • New wood framed shear walls will be installed in-line with the concrete walls below at strategic locations to provide lateral support.
  • Brace all storage racks, cabinets, and bookshelves to structure.
  • Attach and brace mechanical equipment, emergency lighting, piping, ducting, and gas piping per current code.

Grant Value: $2,500,000
